CMA CGM Expands Methanol Fleet with CMA CGM Gold | Mariner News

Trust Score: 98

CMA CGM has further augmented its fleet of methanol-fuelled container ships with the delivery of the 13,000 TEU CMA CGM Gold. This addition underscores the French shipping firm’s ongoing commitment to alternative marine fuels and its strategic investment in decarbonization pathways.

The CMA CGM Gold, capable of operating on both methanol and conventional fuels, is the latest in a series of 12 identical sister ships. Its arrival follows the delivery of another methanol-capable vessel last month, signaling a consistent pace in fleet modernization and environmental compliance.

This new vessel joins other dual-fuel methanol ships already in service for the group, including the CMA CGM Iron—the first in the series—as well as the CMA CGM Osmium, CMA CGM Silver, and CMA CGM Copper. The steady integration of these vessels provides CMA CGM with increased operational flexibility on routes where methanol bunkering infrastructure is developing.

The continued inflow of methanol-capable tonnage from major players like CMA CGM is a critical factor in stimulating the demand for marine methanol, which in turn supports the expansion of bunkering networks and supply chains for the alternative fuel. The container shipping sector has emerged as a significant driver of methanol-fuelled vessel orders, contributing substantially to the overall orderbook for these ships.

Beyond its methanol investments, CMA CGM has also recently taken delivery of an LNG-capable container ship, highlighting a diversified approach to alternative marine fuels aimed at mitigating risks and enhancing the resilience of its green fleet strategy.
