The Australian Government has committed AU$162,500 ($114,342) to establish a new Low-Carbon Liquid Fuels Knowledge Hub, aimed at supporting the uptake of these sustainable alternatives, including for marine applications. Announced on September 18, this initiative seeks to centralize critical information for industry stakeholders navigating the energy transition.

The Hub will serve as a single, evidence-based resource, bringing together data on fuel feedstocks, supply chains, sustainability metrics, standards, certification processes, relevant projects, and government programmes. Its direct inclusion of marine fuels signals Australia’s intent to provide clear guidance for shipping’s decarbonization efforts in the region.

For maritime operators and bunker suppliers, the establishment of this centralized hub could significantly streamline due diligence processes and reduce the complexity of identifying viable low-carbon bunkering options. By aggregating information on standards and certification, the Hub offers a foundation for greater market confidence and potentially faster adoption rates within the sector.

Low-carbon liquid fuels covered by the Hub include those derived from biomass and waste materials, such as agricultural and forestry by-products, as well as fuels produced from renewable hydrogen combined with captured carbon dioxide. This outlines specific pathways Australia is considering, offering clarity for long-term investment and operational planning for vessels trading in Australian waters.

The Hub was delivered in partnership with Queensland University of Technology through the iMOVE Cooperative Research Centre. It is intended to provide Australians, industry, and communities with practical resources to aid in the transition to lower-carbon energy.
