APM Terminals to Boost Nigeria Investments, Develop Badagry | Mariner News
APM Terminals is significantly expanding its investment footprint in Nigeria, with an agreement signed by Vincent Clerc targeting enhanced operations in Apapa and the development of a greenfield port in Badagry. This strategic commitment, detailed on 8 September 2026, is set to bolster Nigeria’s position in the West African container trade.
The Badagry Port project, a key component of the new investment, is designed to accommodate larger container ships and expand Nigeria’s cargo transshipment capabilities. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for its development was formally signed in Copenhagen.
This move to facilitate larger vessels at Badagry suggests a strategic shift in West African port dynamics. It could enable direct mainline calls for New Panamax or even larger tonnage, potentially reshaping existing vessel deployment strategies and altering regional feeder network requirements by consolidating transshipment volumes in Nigeria.
The substantial investment in expanded capacity and transshipment capabilities is poised to intensify competition among West African ports for regional hub status. It offers the potential to streamline supply chains across a broader hinterland, creating more efficient cargo flows and enhancing Nigeria’s role as a gateway to the wider sub-region.
