ZESTAs, SASHA collaborate on sustainable maritime solutions

This partnership aims to facilitate policy and industry actions that support the maritime energy transition.

Together, the two coalitions represent 70 companies advocating for policies that support zero emission solutions, which include hydrogen, battery-electric, and wind propulsion technologies.

ZESTAs unites shipping companies that are focused on zero-carbon emission technologies.

The SASHA Coalition, supported by the climate NGO Opportunity Green, brings together stakeholders from the shipping and aviation sectors to promote policies that favour green hydrogen solutions.

ZESTAs secretary-general Madadh MacLaine said: “We have had the technology to achieve absolute zero emissions in maritime transport for decades. These technologies are market ready but require solid policy and regulations to be commercially viable.

“The deteriorating state of our ocean demonstrates that there’s no room for risk. Shipping can no longer ignore its obligation to ocean health.”

In May this year, the coalitions co-signed a letter directed at European commissioners, urging them to enhance EU green shipping policies to address shortcomings in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations established in April 2025.

The letter, endorsed by seven industry bodies and NGOs, urged the EU to implement financial support mechanisms for e-fuel producers as part of the upcoming Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP).

It also urged the expansion of the EU maritime emissions trading system to include ships under 5,000 gross tonnes, the strengthening of the FuelEU Maritime targets, and the continuation of advocacy for ambitious policies at the IMO that incentivise the adoption of low emission solutions.

SASHA Coalition EU Policy director Aurelia Leeuw said: “Pooling our expertise to drive maritime decarbonisation, the SASHA Coalition and ZESTAs together are more than the sum of our parts.

“While green maritime policy needs strengthening across the board, regulation to support absolute zero emission technologies is particularly lacking: the industry players best positioned to adopt these solutions are not yet incentivised to do so.”

The SASHA Coalition will participate in ZESTAs’ London International Shipping Week event titled, “HyWindships: How to Achieve Absolute Zero Emissions in Trans-Oceanic Shipping”, scheduled on 16 September at the IMO.

This event will see industry leaders and policymakers discuss strategies for achieving absolute zero emissions in maritime operations.
