World’s First Dual-Rotor Floating Wind Power Platform Launched In China’s Yangjiang

Mingyang Smart Energy, a Chinese company, has launched OceanX, the world’s largest and most powerful floating wind power platform.
The floating platform’s deployment began on August 11, 2024, and it is expected to arrive at its offshore location at the Qinghou IV Offshore Wind Farm in Yangjiang, China, by August 14, 2024.
The route covers 191 nautical miles and includes passing through busy harbours and under major bridges within the Pearl River Delta’s complex waterways.
OceanX was built at the CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard and launched in mid-July. The platform features a dual-rotor design with a distinctive “V” shape. Each of the two towers supports an 8.3 MW MySE hybrid drive offshore wind turbine for a total capacity of 16.6 MW.
The platform’s innovative design uses ultra-high-performance concrete to increase strength and durability.
OceanX has impressive dimensions, standing 219 meters (718 feet) high and with a maximum width of around 369 meters (1,200 feet). It has a displacement of approximately 15,000 tons and is intended for deployment in waters 35 meters (115 feet) or deeper.

Its single-point mooring method is designed to survive harsh typhoon conditions, including winds up to 161 mph (260 km/h) and waves up to 98 feet (30 meters).
The platform also has a downwind design, which reduces the structure’s weight by 40%. It incorporates over 3,000 sensors to monitor its operational state, delivering real-time data on displacement, stress, temperature, vibration, and more.
Mingyang Smart Energy, a leading player in the offshore wind power sector, claims OceanX is a game-changing innovation in renewable energy.
The platform is estimated to generate approximately 54 million kWh per year, enough to power roughly 30,000 houses.
The deployment follows Mingyang’s recent introduction of other notable advancements, including the world’s first typhoon-proof wind turbine with an 18 MW capacity, which was unveiled in December 2023.
The OceanX platform shows Mingyang’s dedication to expanding offshore wind technology, with a focus on large-scale, high-capacity solutions.
The company is also working with China Three Gorges and China National Offshore Oil Company to improve and implement its offshore wind technologies.
Mingyang’s latest turbine design advancements, such as the newly disclosed 20 MW prototype, demonstrate the company’s competitive advantage in the global wind energy market.
