Wattlab Powers BRF Froan with 96 Solar Flatracks for Clean Energy
Berge Rederi has officially partnered with Wattlab to equip the BRF Froan, the world’s largest battery-powered bulk carrier, with an advanced onboard solar energy system. This groundbreaking project will see 96 Solar Flatracks installed on the vessel’s hatches, generating a substantial 172.8 kWp of clean energy. This collaboration, celebrated at Europort Rotterdam, marks a significant milestone for sustainable maritime operations and underscores the growing demand for renewable power in shipping.
Efficient Onboard Solar Integration
Wattlab’s Solar Flatracks are designed for rapid deployment, allowing for the installation of all 96 units in just one day during a stop-over in Flushing, Netherlands. This smart, flexible design, evident in the visible solar panels displayed at industry events, ensures minimal disruption to vessel operations. The system is also easily stackable, allowing decks to be cleared for special cargo, showcasing Wattlab’s deep understanding of vessel operational needs.
Pioneering Zero-Emission Voyages
The BRF Froan represents a pioneering step towards zero-emission shipping. Beyond its powerful solar installation, the vessel will feature two advanced rotor sails, a 23.5 MWh battery package charged by shore power, and an electric excavator for emission-free cargo handling. This holistic approach by Berge Rederi, supported by Wattlab’s proven maritime solar expertise, positions the BRF Froan as a leader in environmentally responsible marine transport.
