Wartsila Ammonia Engine Powers Skarv Newbuild in China | Mariner News

Trust Score: 95

Wartsila is set to supply its advanced ammonia engine for a new cargo vessel ordered by Skarv Shipping Solutions, marking a pivotal moment for sustainable maritime transport. This groundbreaking project, with the newbuild constructed at China’s Huanghai shipyard, will feature Wartsila’s pioneering four-stroke ammonia engine, significantly advancing the shipping industry’s decarbonization efforts. This collaboration underscores a strong commitment to adopting future fuels and reducing environmental impact across the global fleet.

Advancing Green Propulsion Technology

Wartsila’s innovative ammonia engine is engineered to deliver a remarkable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, achieving at least 90% lower emissions compared to conventional diesel when utilizing sustainable ammonia. Beyond the main engine, Wartsila will also integrate its comprehensive fuel gas supply system, an advanced ammonia release mitigation system, and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit. This integrated approach ensures both high performance and environmental responsibility, setting a new benchmark for low-emission shipping.

Pioneering Project and Future Outlook

Skarv Shipping Solutions placed the order for this ammonia-powered vessel in February 2025, with Wartsila’s order booked in Q4 2025. Deliveries of the engine components are slated for Q4 2026, leading to the vessel’s full delivery by Q2 2027. Jan Øivind Svardal, CEO of Skarv Shipping Solutions, emphasized the importance of strong European companies like Wartsila leading the charge towards carbon-free propulsion. This new 160 m3 ammonia tank vessel is designed for timber transport and will be chartered to Arriva Shipping, showcasing a practical application of green maritime innovation in the bulk sector.
