Viking Line is making significant strides towards sustainable shipping, announcing it has secured enough bio-LNG to cover 50% of its LNG-fuelled vessels’ fuel needs for the first half of 2026. This strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to maritime decarbonization and the transition to cleaner energy sources in the shipping industry. The use of this advanced renewable fuel marks a crucial step in reducing emissions on its key routes.
Advancing Green Maritime Fuels
The secured bio-LNG will be utilized alongside conventional LNG on Viking Line’s modern ferries, Viking Glory and Viking Grace, which operate daily services between Turku and Stockholm. Dani Lindberg, Head of Sustainability at Viking Line, emphasized the ambition to maintain a high level of biogas utilization throughout the year. This follows a substantial increase in bio-LNG consumption, with approximately 6,000 metric tons bunkered in 2025, a tenfold jump from 2024 volumes.
Pioneering Fossil-Free Routes
Beyond securing renewable fuels, Viking Line is actively developing a groundbreaking green shipping corridor between Turku and Stockholm. This initiative, in cooperation with the Ports of Stockholm and the Port of Turku, aims to achieve a fully fossil-free route by 2035. Bio-LNG serves as a vital component in this strategy, offering a cleaner, drop-in alternative to fossil LNG, directly supporting the ambitious environmental goals for sustainable maritime operations. These efforts highlight Viking Line’s leadership in environmental responsibility within the shipping sector.
