Vietnam’s First Methanol Dual-Fuel Tanker Delivered | Mariner News

Vietnam’s maritime industry has achieved a significant milestone with the delivery of the country’s first methanol dual-fuel tanker. The vessel, named ASP Rainbow, marks a pivotal step towards greener shipping practices and decarbonization efforts in the region. Delivered to ASP Asia Pacific Shipping Company Limited, this 49,500-dwt tanker represents a new era of environmentally conscious operations for the Vietnamese fleet.
A Milestone for Sustainable Shipping
The ASP Rainbow was delivered in China on November 20 by Guangzhou Shipyard International, a subsidiary of CSSC. This innovative vessel is not only the first in Vietnam capable of utilizing methanol bunkers but also one of the initial new builds for ASP, alongside its sister ship, ASP Sunshine. The integration of dual-fuel technology allows these advanced tankers to operate on cleaner-burning methanol, significantly reducing emissions and contributing to a more sustainable maritime future.
The Growing Methanol Fleet
Globally, methanol propulsion is gaining considerable traction within the shipping sector. Data from classification society DNV reveals that the world’s methanol-fuelled fleet currently comprises 93 ships, with a projected increase to 354 vessels by 2030. While container ships lead in new orders, the delivery of the ASP Rainbow highlights a growing adoption of methanol as a viable alternative fuel for tankers, underscoring the industry’s commitment to eco-friendly solutions and reduced environmental impact.
