Vessev’s hydrofoiling ferry begins passenger service in Auckland
Vessev has announced that the first Vessev VS-9 electric hydrofoiling ferry has commenced commercial service with Fullers360, New Zealand’s ferry transport and tourism operator.
This is the “first time” globally that a certified electric hydrofoiling vessel is joining the fleet of an operator for commercial use, the company stated.
Named Kermadec, the vessel will begin transporting passengers on tourism trips across Auckland’s waterways.
The 9m vessel can cruise at a service speed of 25kt. It is powered by type-approved battery packs, allowing it to cover a range of 50 nautical miles (92.6km) with its “advanced” hydrofoiling technology derived from America’s Cup racing yachts.
Fullers360 chief commercial officer Tim O’Halloran said: “The Vessev VS–9 is a game-changer for our fleet and our passengers. Its innovative design and sustainable operation are perfectly suited to Auckland’s vibrant maritime landscape, and we are excited to welcome our first passengers onboard.”
The VS-9 features a “spacious and modern interior” designed for both “comfort and convenience”.

The ferry’s zero-emission propulsion system is said to support New Zealand’s sustainability goals and align with the government’s vision for “greener transportation networks”.
Furthermore, the ferry can operate across various water bodies and sea states and it can be transported over land using a trailer.
Vessev CEO Laakmann said: “The VS-9 is the first electric vessel to enter the Fullers360 fleet and represents an enormous step on their path to being net zero by 2040.
“For the public, we’re thrilled that they can now also share in what we’ve been experiencing since the launch of the VS-9 in May.”
Vessev is also looking ahead to future projects, such as the VS-18, a 100-seater electric hydrofoiling commuter ferry.
In June 2024, Vessev concluded the initial testing phase of the VS-9 vessel completing 24 test sessions.
In May of the same year, Vessev launched the VS-9 electric hydrofoil ferry in Auckland.
