US Seizes Fifth Ghost Fleet Tanker in Caribbean | Mariner News
U.S. forces successfully executed a pre-dawn operation in the Caribbean, leading to the U.S. seizure of a fifth “ghost fleet” tanker. This significant action marks another blow against illicit maritime activities and the shadow fleet involved in the Venezuela oil trade. The vessel, identified as the tanker Olina, was intercepted by a coordinated effort, sending a clear message to those operating outside international regulations.
Coordinated Maritime Enforcement
The latest seizure saw U.S. Marines and sailors from Joint Task Force Southern Spear, in support of the U.S. Coast Guard, board the 114,809 dwt tanker Olina. Launched from the USS Gerald R. Ford and supported by a U.S. Navy Amphibious Ready Group, the operation was completed without incident. This sophisticated interagency action underscores the commitment to upholding maritime security in the region.
Combating Illicit Oil Transport
The Olina, part of the notorious shadow fleet, had previously faced sanctions from the UK, U.S., and EU. Its history includes operating without valid registration or insurance, and transporting Russian oil in violation of the G7 price cap. Such enforcement actions are vital in disrupting the flow of illegal oil, reinforcing international sanctions, and ensuring accountability within the global shipping industry.
