US Destroyer Blocks Sanctioned Shadow Tanker Near Venezuela
Reports confirm a US destroyer has repeatedly blocked a sanctioned shadow tanker from delivering fuel to Venezuela, underscoring escalating US pressure on the South American nation. This significant maritime security operation highlights global efforts to enforce sanctions and disrupt illicit shipping routes.
Monitoring Evasive Maritime Operations
Using advanced vessel tracking data, the USS Stockdale notably intercepted the tanker *Seahorse* on three separate occasions since November 13. Each attempt saw the US destroyer strategically position itself, forcing the *Seahorse* to reverse course towards Cuba or remain offshore, reporting ‘awaiting orders’ north of Aruba. This tactical interdiction demonstrates the effectiveness of naval presence in confronting non-compliant vessels.
Combating Illicit Oil Trade and Sanctioned Vessels
The *Seahorse*, a common player in the shadow fleet, is linked to transporting naphtha from Russian refineries and has been implicated in Iran-Venezuela trade, supporting critical oil operations. Built in 2004, this 70,246-dwt tanker has undergone numerous name changes and fraudulent flag registrations, like Comoros, to evade detection. Both the EU and UK imposed sanctions on the vessel in 2025, further tightening the net on its illicit activities.
