German energy firm Uniper has finalized a significant green ammonia offtake deal with India’s AM Green, marking a crucial step towards shipping use of sustainable fuels. This long-term agreement positions green ammonia as a key element in maritime decarbonization, with first shipments expected from 2028 to supply European industries and future shipping applications.

Driving Sustainable Shipping Fuels

Under the binding agreement, Uniper will procure up to 500,000 metric tons per year of green ammonia from AM Green’s Indian projects. This substantial volume of renewable ammonia is poised to support Europe’s industrial demands, serving as both a vital chemical feedstock and a hydrogen carrier. The clear intent to explore its potential as a marine fuel underscores a strong commitment to sustainable shipping globally.

Strengthening Clean Energy Supply Chains

AM Green’s 1 million mt/year plant in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, currently under construction, will be the primary source for this supply. The renewable ammonia produced is specifically designed to meet stringent European RFNBO compliance standards, ensuring its eligibility for green energy markets. This partnership strengthens global clean energy supply chains, vital for achieving climate goals.
