TotalEnergies and its Nigerian partner AMNI have taken a Final Investment Decision (FID) to develop the offshore Ima gas field in Nigeria, a move set to boost feedgas supply to the Nigeria LNG (NLNG) plant. This development supports a significant expansion of Nigeria’s liquefaction capacity.
The Ima field, located on OML 112 and 117 near Bonny Island, is projected to commence production in 2028. It is expected to reach a plateau output of 350 million cubic feet of gas per day, equivalent to over 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Gas from Ima will be transported via pipeline to Nigeria LNG, supplying approximately one-third of the feedgas required for the facility’s Train 7 expansion project. This expansion is anticipated to increase NLNG’s total liquefaction capacity from the current 22 million metric tons per year to 30 million tons annually.
The 8 million metric ton annual increase in Nigeria LNG’s liquefaction capacity, supported by the Ima field, directly signals a future uplift in demand for LNG carrier employment. From 2028 onwards, this additional volume will require dedicated shipping capacity, influencing chartering strategies and potentially the newbuild orderbook for vessels capable of serving this expanded trade. TotalEnergies noted the project adds “low-cost gas resources,” which could enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian LNG in global markets.
