Thessaloniki Port Pier 6 Expansion Begins: Major Upgrade

Trust Score: 95

The Port of Thessaloniki is embarking on its most significant transformation as the contract for the Pier 6 expansion was officially signed. This landmark agreement initiates the largest upgrade project in the history of the Port of Thessaloniki, a vital hub for regional trade. ThPA S.A. partnered with the “METKA S.A. – TEKAL S.A. (PIER 6) J/V” for this crucial infrastructure development, aiming to dramatically enhance the port’s capabilities and cement its position in global maritime logistics.

Enhancing Thessaloniki’s Maritime Capacity

The expansion of Pier 6 is a substantial undertaking, adding an impressive 513 meters in length and 306.5 meters in width to the existing port infrastructure. A key component of this project includes the significant dredging of the navigation channel and maneuvering areas, ensuring safe mooring and operation for ULCV vessels (Ultra Large Container Vessels). This strategic development will drastically strengthen ThPA S.A.’s ability to handle larger cargo volumes, improving efficiency and accessibility.

Strategic Impact on Regional Trade

This multi-million-euro investment marks a new era for shipping infrastructure in Northern Greece and the wider Balkan region. By accommodating the largest container ships, the Thessaloniki port upgrade will boost trade flow, attract new shipping lines, and create substantial economic opportunities. The project underscores Greece’s commitment to modernizing its port facilities, positioning Thessaloniki as a competitive gateway for international commerce and a critical player in the Eastern Mediterranean’s logistics network. This comprehensive development promises long-term benefits for the entire maritime sector.
