Thessaloniki Port Expansion: New Eastern Europe Container Gateway

Trust Score: 90

The Thessaloniki Port expansion has officially begun, marking a significant milestone for Greece’s maritime future. This ambitious project aims to dramatically increase the port’s container capacity, positioning Thessaloniki as a crucial Eastern Europe gateway and a viable alternative in regional supply chains. This aligns with the US’s call for reduced reliance on COSCO in Greek ports.

Boosting Container Capacity for Northern Greece

The expansion includes lengthening Pier 6 by 513 meters and enlarging container yard space. Substantial dredging will deepen the navigation channel, enabling the port to handle very large container vessels (VLCVs) up to 24,000 TEU—a unique capability for Northern Greece. With a €195.6 million budget, the port’s annual capacity will reach 1.5 million TEU, tripling current handling capabilities.

Strategic Gateway for Eastern European Trade

This major infrastructure upgrade transforms Thessaloniki into a key transshipment hub for Eastern Europe. The port is now poised to strengthen global maritime logistics and offer diverse options for international trade routes. This expansion enhances Greece’s role in the broader European and Mediterranean supply chain.

Impact on Greek Ports and Regional Dynamics

Taking 40 months, this project symbolizes Greece’s commitment to modernizing its port infrastructure. Beyond economic benefits, it contributes to strategic diversification in Greek ports, fostering greater competition and resilience in regional maritime trade. Thessaloniki is rapidly emerging as a pivotal player in European shipping.
