Sumitomo, VTT Partner on Syngas for Green Marine Fuels | Mariner News
Leading energy solutions firm Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland have announced a strategic licensing agreement focused on advancing syngas technology for the production of alternative marine fuels. This pivotal collaboration aims to revolutionize sustainable shipping by converting various biowaste streams into cleaner energy sources for vessels worldwide.
Innovating with Biowaste for Marine Fuel
VTT’s proven technology will enable SFW to utilize its plants for converting diverse biowaste, including agricultural residues and municipal waste, into valuable fuels. Syngas, a vital blend of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, serves as a key feedstock for producing advanced renewable fuels such as green methanol. This offers a significantly cleaner alternative to conventional bunker fuels, crucial for reducing maritime emissions.
Accelerating Maritime Decarbonization Efforts
The partnership builds upon over 15 years of joint research and development in renewable transportation fuels. Tomas Harju-Jeanty, CEO of SFW, confirmed the technology’s readiness for commercial application in sectors including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and carbon-neutral maritime fuels. This step marks a significant leap towards achieving ambitious global decarbonization goals within the shipping industry and beyond.
