Steerprop Powers Polarstern: Icebreaker Propulsion Package | Mariner News
Finnish marine propulsion expert Steerprop has secured a significant order to deliver a comprehensive propulsion package, including advanced tunnel thrusters, for the new German Research Vessel Polarstern. This landmark agreement solidifies Steerprop’s role in equipping one of the world’s most advanced PC2 icebreakers with a fully integrated icebreaker propulsion system designed for extreme polar conditions.
A Complete Integrated Propulsion Solution
The order extends Steerprop’s earlier contract, ensuring that the new Polarstern will be outfitted with two high-performance Steerprop SP 160 Pull azimuth thrusters for main propulsion, complemented by two new Steerprop SP 40 TT ARC tunnel thrusters. This represents a pioneering achievement, marking the first time a Polar Class 2 icebreaker project has entrusted main propulsion, tunnel thrusters, and hydrodynamic integration to a single supplier. This integrated approach promises optimized performance and reliability in demanding polar environments.
Advancing Polar Research with Robust Thruster Technology
TKMS, the shipbuilder for the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), emphasized Steerprop’s capability to meet stringent ice-class and noise specifications as a key factor in their selection. This robust marine propulsion technology is crucial for the Polarstern, which is designed for long-term investment in advancing polar science. The collaborative effort between Steerprop, TKMS, and AWI highlights a commitment to cutting-edge vessel technology essential for critical polar research.
