Steerprop Powers Ostensjo’s New Hybrid Tug Propulsion | Mariner News
Steerprop, a Finnish marine propulsion expert, is set to deliver cutting-edge hybrid tug propulsion systems for Ostensjo Rederi’s new vessel. This advanced hybrid tug, currently under construction at Gondan Shipbuilders in Spain, is designed to be a flagship for the Norwegian owner, emphasizing efficiency and environmental responsibility in offshore towage and support work. This collaboration marks a significant step towards more sustainable maritime operations, combining powerful performance with reduced environmental impact.
Advanced Hybrid Propulsion System
Steerprop will equip the new tug with two SP 50 W D dual-end azimuth units, enabling flexible operation on electric power, diesel power, or a combination of both. This innovative system allows the vessel to achieve an impressive 150 tonnes of bollard pull and maintain precise positioning during demanding offshore operations. Most daily tasks are anticipated to run on electric power, reserving diesel for peak pulling requirements, thereby optimizing fuel efficiency and minimizing emissions.
A Sustainable Flagship for Offshore Operations
Designed by Skipsteknisk, this state-of-the-art tug is poised to become Ostensjo Rederi’s leading vessel in its offshore fleet. Kristain Helland Vea, CEO of Ostensjo Rederi, highlighted that the newbuild represents a major advancement, achieving the “highest possible efficiency through a hybrid propulsion configuration tailored to its operating profile.” This strategic choice reinforces the company’s commitment to strengthening its fleet with technologically advanced and environmentally sound solutions for the future of marine operations.
