Singapore MPA Issues 5-Year Methanol Bunkering Licences
Singapore is significantly advancing its green shipping initiatives. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) will issue five-year methanol bunkering licences to three prominent firms – Global Energy Trading, Golden Island, and PetroChina International (Singapore) – starting January 1, 2026. This strategic move solidifies Singapore’s commitment to becoming a leading multi-fuel bunkering hub, offering diverse marine fuel options to support global maritime decarbonization efforts. The licences, valid until December 2030, aim to foster operational capabilities and robust supply chains for alternative fuels.
Driving Sustainable Marine Fuel Adoption
The MPA’s decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of 13 applicants, assessing their supply chain reliability, operational readiness, safety protocols, and the sustainability certification of the methanol fuel. This rigorous process underscores Singapore’s dedication to ensuring a safe and reliable supply of cleaner marine energy. Introducing methanol as a viable marine fuel option is crucial for ship operators looking to reduce their carbon footprint and comply with stricter environmental regulations.
Singapore’s Multi-Fuel Bunkering Hub Vision
This initiative is a cornerstone of Singapore’s broader ambition to evolve into a versatile multi-fuel bunkering hub. By embracing fuels like methanol, the Port of Singapore enhances its appeal to shipping lines pursuing sustainable maritime operations. The extended five-year licence term provides ample opportunity for licensees to develop infrastructure and investment, thereby accelerating the growth of the methanol bunkering market. Singapore continues to lead the charge in future-proofing global shipping through innovative fuel strategies.
