Singapore Expands LNG Marine Fuel Bunkering Licenses | Mariner News

Trust Score: 50

Singapore, the world’s leading bunkering hub, is significantly expanding its LNG bunkering capabilities by opening applications for additional licenses to supply liquefied natural gas as a marine fuel. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has invited both current LNG suppliers and new entrants to apply, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to advancing sustainable shipping solutions. This strategic move aligns with global efforts to decarbonize the maritime sector and promotes the adoption of cleaner energy sources.

Driving Cleaner Marine Fuel Adoption

This initiative follows crucial updates to Singapore’s LNG bunkering framework, which now supports innovative sea-based LNG reloading methods. Critically, the framework also permits the supply of liquefied bio-methane and e-methane, propelling Singapore to the forefront of the maritime energy transition. In 2025, Singapore reported record marine fuel sales of 56.20 million metric tons, with LNG bunker sales seeing a robust 23.1% year-on-year growth to 571,400 metric tons, underscoring the increasing demand for sustainable fuel options.

Rigorous Standards for Sustainable Bunkering

To ensure high operational standards and environmental responsibility, licensees must establish comprehensive end-to-end LNG bunkering arrangements. A key requirement is owning or chartering at least one LNG bunker vessel registered in Singapore. Applicants are also mandated to detail plans for supplying lower-emission LNG fuels and implement measures to monitor and mitigate methane slip from bunker vessels. These stringent criteria reflect Singapore’s dedication to fostering a green port environment. Interested parties must submit their applications to the MPA by March 27, 2026, marking a pivotal step towards a more sustainable global shipping industry.
