Samskip Powers Hydrogen Ships with Norwegian Hydrogen | Mariner News
Samskip is making significant strides in maritime decarbonization by choosing Norwegian Hydrogen as its green hydrogen supplier for its new hydrogen-powered ships. This strategic partnership marks a crucial step towards sustainable shipping, powering two innovative container vessels designed for operations between Oslo and Rotterdam. The collaboration highlights a strong commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of the shipping industry through advanced, zero-emission fuel solutions.
Green Hydrogen Partnership for Sustainable Shipping
The agreement, formalized in late 2025, sees Norwegian Hydrogen providing green hydrogen from its planned production facility in Rjukan, Norway. These 135-meter container ships, currently under construction in India, are set to revolutionize shortsea logistics. The first vessel is anticipated to begin operations in Q2 2027, following final hydrogen system upgrades, ensuring a reliable supply of clean fuel for their crucial route.
Advancing Zero-Emission Maritime Transport
This ambitious project, supported by funding from the EU Innovation Fund and Norway’s Enova fund, underscores the growing momentum for sustainable maritime transport. With renewable electricity access and local approvals secured, Norwegian Hydrogen expects to commence deliveries by 2028. Samskip’s investment in these zero-emission vessels sets a powerful precedent for the industry, driving innovation in eco-friendly shipping practices globally.
