Samskip Powers Green Container Ships with Norwegian Hydrogen | Mariner News
Samskip is making significant strides in maritime decarbonization by selecting Norwegian Hydrogen as its preferred supplier for hydrogen-powered ships. This pivotal partnership will fuel two innovative container vessels, currently under construction, marking a major step towards cleaner shipping operations between Oslo and Rotterdam. The collaboration underscores a strong commitment to adopting green energy solutions in the bustling shortsea shipping sector.
Fueling Sustainable Container Shipping
These 135-meter container ships, being built at Cochin Shipyard in India, will utilize advanced hydrogen fuel cells, complemented by a backup diesel generator for operational resilience. The first vessel is anticipated to begin service in Q2 2027, following essential hydrogen system upgrades in Rotterdam. This initiative is set to significantly reduce emissions and promote a more environmentally friendly logistics chain.
Green Hydrogen Production and Future Operations
Norwegian Hydrogen will provide green hydrogen from its upcoming production facility in Rjukan, Norway. This ambitious project, bolstered by funding from the EU Innovation Fund and Norway’s Enova fund, has already secured renewable electricity access and local approvals. Deliveries of sustainable hydrogen are slated to commence in 2028, ensuring a consistent supply for Samskip’s eco-friendly fleet. This collaboration highlights the growing infrastructure for marine hydrogen fuel.
