Riyadh MOU launches CIC on ship lifting appliances and loose gear

The Riyadh MOU, which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, has announced it will launch a CIC on ship’s lifting appliances, to run from 1 September 2024 to 30 November 2024. This follows recent updates on the joint PSC CICs by the Paris, Tokyo, and Abuja MOUs regarding Crew Wages and Seafarer Employment Agreements (MLC, 2006).

The purpose is to ensure that ship crew members are properly trained so that they are familiar with the different types of crane equipment and can spot any potential hazards in a timely manner and know what actions to take in the event of an emergency.

According to Captain Akshat Arora, Senior Risk Assessor, in this context, ‘lifting appliances’ refers to all stationary or mobile appliances used on board ships for suspending, raising, or lowering loads or moving them from one position to another while suspended.

Meanwhile, P&I Club highlights that ‘loose gear’ means any gear through which a load can be attached to a lifting appliance, but which does not form an integral part of the appliance or load.
