Built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries at the Ulsan Shipyard, Al Zuwair will operate under a time-charter contract with QatarEnergy.
Al Zuwair measures approximately 299m in length with a 46.4m beam and has a cargo capacity of approximately 174,000m3. The vessel features two dual-fuel slow-speed X-DF 2.1 iCER diesel engines.
Furthermore, the vessel is fitted with an air lubrication system and a reliquefaction device that efficiently utilises surplus boil-off gas.
These features aim to optimise fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, aligning with environmental sustainability goals.
The newly delivered LNG carrier marks the inaugural occasion on which the NYK Group will offer ship management services to the joint venture consortium.
NYK’s medium-term management plan, “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026,” focuses on deepening core businesses and investing in new growth areas.
The LNG/LPG carrier business is at the forefront of this strategy, with NYK leveraging its extensive experience to support Japan’s stable energy supply.
In April, the first new LNG carrier in the series was named Al Tuwar at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) in China.
The vessel is set to commence the transportation of LNG to various countries worldwide in May.
In November last year, QatarEnergy added four conventional-size LNG vessels to its fleet.
Built at Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean Shipyard in South Korea, these ships are part of an order of 128 vessels, representing the most extensive shipbuilding programme in the LNG industry’s history.
