Palau Government Assumes Control of Ship Registry | Mariner News

Trust Score: 95

Palau’s government has announced it is taking direct control of its national ship registry. This significant move follows sanctions against its former private-sector partner, prompting the government to secure the integrity and oversight of the Palau Open Ship Registry. The transition aims to protect the strong reputation of the Palau flag and maintain continuous, high-quality maritime services for all stakeholders.

Ensuring Seamless Maritime Services

The Bureau of Marine Transportation, under the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Industries (MPII), will now manage all aspects of vessel registration, certification, and other flag-state duties. Officials confirm that all registry services are operating without interruption, fully compliant with Palau’s national laws and international maritime standards. This direct government management ensures stability and reliability for vessels flying the Palau flag.

Upholding the Palau Flag’s Integrity

To facilitate a smooth transition, the government is implementing changes to maritime legislation while retaining experienced staff and existing systems. This strategic decision reinforces Palau’s commitment to its maritime sector. Shipowners are assured that the Palau flag remains valid and trusted, with no expected impact on their operations. Director Hayes Moses of the Bureau of Marine Transportation affirmed their priority is “continuity of service and the effective administration of the Palau Flag.”
