Oldendorff & eMarine Partner for Fleet Fuel Efficiency | Mariner News
Oldendorff Carriers, a prominent name in global shipping, is making significant strides in fleet sustainability through a new partnership with Swedish technology firm eMarine. This collaboration aims to profoundly cut fuel use and enhance energy efficiency across Oldendorff’s vessels, marking a major step towards greener maritime operations and reduced environmental impact.
Implementing Advanced VFD Technology
The heart of this initiative lies in deploying eMarine’s innovative Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) technology. Already rolled out on 13 owned vessels, with more planned, VFD systems intelligently optimize the speed of onboard cooling pumps. Instead of running continuously at maximum power, these pumps adjust their output to match actual demand, dramatically curtailing unnecessary electricity consumption during normal voyages. This precise control directly leads to lower bunker fuel consumption for the Oldendorff fleet.
Driving Environmental and Cost Benefits
Oldendorff reports impressive early results from these installations, with estimated carbon dioxide savings already surpassing 5,000 tonnes. Beyond significant emissions cuts, these upgrades also deliver substantial reductions in operational costs, reinforcing the economic viability of sustainable maritime practices. This move positions Oldendorff as a leader in adopting advanced solutions for a more sustainable shipping industry.
