NYK Secures Dual-Fuel LNG Carrier Deal with Cheniere | Mariner News
NYK Line has announced a significant long-term charter deal with Cheniere Marketing International, a subsidiary of US LNG producer Cheniere Energy, for new dual-fuel LNG carriers. This strategic partnership, also involving Norway’s Ocean Yield, marks a major step forward for sustainable practices in the global maritime industry, enhancing the supply chain for cleaner energy. The advanced vessels are slated for delivery starting in 2028 from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.
Advancing Sustainable Maritime Transport
Built with a 200,000 m3 membrane-type tank, these state-of-the-art LNG carriers are designed to meet future environmental regulations. Crucially, they will be equipped with advanced dual-fuel LNG engines from Swiss maker WinGD, allowing them to operate on both liquefied natural gas and conventional marine fuels. This operational flexibility supports the maritime industry’s transition towards more environmentally friendly shipping operations, showcasing a commitment to reducing carbon footprints.
Next-Gen Technology for Enhanced Efficiency
A key innovation in these NYK LNG carriers is their ability to efficiently utilize boil-off gas from their cargo as a fuel source. This natural vapor, which forms as LNG warms during transport, will be reused to power the ships, significantly improving operational efficiency and reducing overall emissions. This forward-thinking approach underscores NYK Line’s commitment to decarbonization and adopting cutting-edge solutions for the future of sustainable shipping and global energy transport.
