Northern Lights Expands Sustainable CO2 Transport Fleet

Trust Score: 92

Northern Lights, the pioneering joint venture between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, has significantly advanced its sustainable operations with the addition of its third LNG-fuelled CO2 transport ship. This new vessel is a crucial component in expanding Europe’s first cross-border carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure, underscoring a robust commitment to global decarbonization efforts and mitigating climate change impacts. The fleet’s growth marks a tangible step towards a greener future for industrial emissions.

The Northern Phoenix: A Leap in Sustainable Shipping

The 7,500 m3 vessel, aptly named Northern Phoenix, was meticulously delivered by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry in China. Currently, it is embarking on its repositioning voyage to Norway, a journey designed for extensive testing and optimization of its advanced energy-saving devices. Upon its arrival, the ship will undergo essential mechanical commissioning at the receiving terminal in Øygarden, preparing it for its critical operational phase.

Secure Carbon Capture and Permanent Storage

Once in service, the Northern Phoenix will diligently transport captured carbon dioxide from industrial partners, initially from Yara, to the state-of-the-art Øygarden terminal. From this hub, the CO2 will then be safely injected via a dedicated pipeline for permanent geological storage, situated approximately 2,600 meters beneath the seabed. This secure and efficient process is fundamental to Northern Lights’ strategy. With plans for a fourth vessel delivery in 2026, the company continues to bolster its role in providing vital infrastructure for a decarbonized economy.
