Northern Lights Charters 4 New CO2 Transport Vessels | Mariner News

Trust Score: 95

Northern Lights, a leading player in maritime decarbonization, has announced a significant expansion of its fleet, securing charters for four new CO2 transport vessels. This strategic move, involving a joint venture between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, marks a crucial step forward for carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure in Europe. These specialized carriers are designed to facilitate cross-border CO2 transport, reinforcing the continent’s commitment to reducing industrial emissions and fostering a greener maritime future.

Expanding Europe’s Carbon Capture Fleet

The charter agreements involve key industry partnerships. A consortium formed by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K LINE) and MISC Berhad has been awarded one vessel, with another expected in April 2026. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines secured two additional vessels, expanding the fleet’s reach. Each of the initial three vessels will boast a substantial cargo capacity of 12,000 m3, optimized for efficient liquid CO2 transport, and will operate under long-term time charters supporting commercial customers.

Driving Sustainable Shipping Solutions

These newbuild CO2 carriers are slated for construction by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Co. Ltd and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with deliveries projected between late 2028 and mid-2029. This timely fleet expansion aligns perfectly with Northern Lights’ existing customer agreements and addresses the escalating demand for robust CO2 transport and storage services across Europe. By investing in these advanced liquid CO2 carriers, Northern Lights is actively driving sustainable shipping solutions and accelerating the transition towards a low-carbon economy.
