MSC Orders Mid-Sized Containerships from Yangzhou Guoyu | Mariner News
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is making a significant pivot in its newbuild strategy, re-entering the mid-sized containership segment. After years of focusing almost exclusively on larger tonnage, this strategic shift is highlighted by a fresh containership order placed with China’s Yangzhou Guoyu Shipyard, signaling a notable adjustment in the carrier’s fleet development.
Specifics of the New Vessel Orders
Market sources confirm MSC has secured firm orders for at least two conventionally fueled vessels, each with a capacity of around 5,000 TEU. Broker insights suggest this agreement could expand to five ships, including options. Deliveries for these new containerships are anticipated to commence in the second half of 2028, continuing into early 2029. While pricing remains undisclosed, experts estimate the cost for these crucial mid-sized vessels to be under $60 million per unit, reflecting simpler designs and limited refrigerated capacity.
MSC’s Evolving Fleet Dynamics
This Yangzhou Guoyu order represents a remarkable deviation from MSC’s recent ordering patterns. The carrier currently boasts the largest orderbook in the global liner industry, with over 2.1 million TEU on order, nearly 30% of its existing fleet. Most of these 120 vessels have been 10,000 TEU and above. The re-engagement with the 5,000 TEU class suggests a renewed focus on network flexibility and diverse shipping market demands, adapting to specific trade route requirements and optimizing operational efficiencies across its global network.
