Moeve & Pretium Renovables Build Biomethane Plants in Spain | Mariner News
Spanish energy firm Moeve has announced a significant strategic agreement with Pretium Renovables to develop between four and six biomethane plants across Spain. This ambitious partnership marks a substantial step forward for the nation’s renewable energy landscape and promises a cleaner fuel alternative, particularly for the maritime sector. The initiative aims to harness agricultural and livestock waste, transforming it into a valuable sustainable energy source.
Boosting Spain’s Renewable Energy Sector
Each of the proposed renewable energy facilities is projected to achieve a production capacity of approximately 60 GWh per year. Andalusia has been identified as the priority region for these developments. Beyond energy production, these projects will contribute significantly to environmental stewardship, with each plant capable of reducing CO2 emissions by an estimated 14,600 tonnes annually. This aligns with Spain’s broader goals for a greener economy and increased energy independence.
Bio-LNG’s Role in Sustainable Shipping
The biomethane produced, when liquefied into bio-LNG, possesses properties similar to conventional fossil LNG, making it an ideal drop-in fuel for the growing fleet of LNG-fuelled vessels. As global regulatory pressures for emission reductions intensify, bio-LNG offers shipowners a crucial and cleaner alternative, accelerating the decarbonization of maritime transport. This collaboration underscores the increasing demand for sustainable fuels in global logistics.
This strategic venture strongly supports Moeve’s objective to expand biomethane production in Spain, targeting an impressive 4 TWh by 2030. The joint effort with Pretium Renovables is pivotal for achieving these renewable energy milestones and establishing Spain as a leader in sustainable fuel solutions.
