Maersk Extends Rotterdam Rail Constraints to Mid-2027

Maersk has confirmed that reduced rail capacity at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam will continue until the end of June 2027, extending the expected period of disruption by six months.

The constraints are a direct consequence of ongoing expansion works at the terminal. Maersk had previously advised customers that rail availability would be restricted until January 2027, but the revised timeline suggests that the infrastructure project will impact intermodal operations for longer than initially projected.

Intermodal Planning and Alternatives

The extension forces a long-term adjustment for shippers and logistics providers who rely on Maasvlakte II as a primary gateway for European inland cargo. With limited rail capacity now a factor for the next three years, the reliability of direct rail-to-stack operations at the terminal remains compromised.

Maersk is currently working with affected shippers to identify suitable transport arrangements for individual cargo flows. Depending on operational availability and specific shipment requirements, the carrier is directing customers toward alternative rail connections where feasible.

The carrier indicated it will continue to monitor the progress of the expansion works and provide further updates should the timeline or operational conditions change again. For now, the maritime industry must account for a significantly narrowed intermodal window at one of the North Range’s most critical container hubs.
