M/MARITIME is strategically broadening its operational scope, entering the containership sector with new orders while simultaneously expanding its core bulk carrier fleet. This development unfolds amidst reinforced Greek-Japanese maritime ties, highlighted by a high-level meeting at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).
The Greek operator, founded by Yiannis Mytilineos, has ordered two 2,800-TEU feeder containerships from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with deliveries scheduled to commence in early 2028. This marks M/MARITIME’s first foray into the container segment, adding a new dimension to its current fleet of 18 bulk carriers.
Concurrently, M/MARITIME continues to invest in its dry cargo presence, having agreed long-term time charters for three newbuild bulk carriers slated for delivery in 2029-2030. Securing charters years in advance suggests a proactive strategy to de-risk investment and secure future employment for these vessels in potentially volatile markets.
The company’s expansion received notable diplomatic recognition during the TIF meeting, where Japanese Ambassador Koichi Ito described M/MARITIME as an “important partner” of Japan’s shipping industry. Taro Kono, chairman of the Japan-Greece Parliamentary Friendship Group, further emphasized the shared identity of both nations as maritime powers. Yiannis Mytilineos also referenced his long-standing relationships with Japanese shipyards, underscoring the deep historical and commercial links underpinning these strategic discussions. The Japanese endorsement suggests a foundation for potential future collaborations across various maritime fronts.
