Lloyd’s Register (LR), HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) have joined forces to develop a new generation of hybrid electric LNG carrier designs, signaling a strategic push towards more sustainable and resilient propulsion systems in the gas sector.

The partners signed an Approval in Principle (AiP) at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, specifically for a 185,000 cbm LNG carrier featuring a hybrid electric propulsion system. This collaboration focuses on strengthening system architecture, redundancy philosophy, and battery integration within the design, key areas for ensuring operational reliability and safety.

A significant implication of this partnership is the proactive development of technical guidance and requirements for hybrid electric propulsion. LR’s early involvement will support the evolution of formalised standards in this emerging technology space, potentially shaping future regulatory frameworks and class rules for low-carbon vessel concepts across the industry.

The project aims to establish a robust framework that will encourage wider adoption of hybrid electric propulsion across the broader LNG carrier market. By de-risking the technology through thorough development and safety verification, the initiative seeks to accelerate its commercial viability and acceptance among owners and charterers.
