Kongsberg Powers Med Marine’s Next-Gen Electric Tugs
Kongsberg Maritime has secured a significant contract with Turkish shipbuilder Med Marine to power its fleet of nine **next-generation tugs**. This partnership reinforces Med Marine’s commitment to advanced marine technology, equipping these innovative vessels, including the pioneering all-electric ‘VoltRA’ tug, with Kongsberg Maritime’s state-of-the-art US series azimuth thrusters and a combination of electric and hydraulic towing winches. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in developing more efficient and environmentally friendly towing operations in the global maritime industry.
Advanced Propulsion for Enhanced Performance
The agreement specifies eight shipsets of Kongsberg Maritime’s high-performance US255 azimuth thrusters for Med Marine’s RAmparts 2500-W and RAstar 3200-W tug designs. Crucially, the revolutionary ‘VoltRA’ electric tug will leverage the robust US205 azimuth thruster, renowned for its reliability and efficiency. These advanced propulsion systems are critical for the demanding operational requirements of modern tugboats, ensuring superior maneuverability and power.
Sustainable Towing Solutions with Electric Winches
Further enhancing these new tug designs, Kongsberg Maritime will supply five shipsets of its newly launched electric towing winches and four hydraulic winches. These electric winches, specifically engineered for the tug market, utilize frequency converter-driven motors. This innovative design significantly improves operational efficiency and reduces the environmental footprint compared to traditional hydraulic systems, aligning with sustainable shipping practices. This project solidifies Med Marine’s reputation as a leading builder of technologically advanced and eco-conscious tugboats.
