Kongsberg Maritime to provide equipment for Sea1 Offshore’s new OCVs
Kongsberg Maritime has secured a contract to deliver a “comprehensive” equipment package for four new offshore construction vessels (OCVs) to be constructed at Chinese shipyard Cosco Nantong for Sea1 Offshore, a Norwegian offshore services provider.
Sea1 Offshore and Kongsberg will also collaborate on a study to assess emissions reductions achieved through latter’s technology.
The equipment package for the new OCVs includes Kongsberg’s K-Pos dynamic positioning systems, integrated control and navigation systems, and battery hybrid DC electrical systems.
The vessels will also be equipped with main propulsion and thruster units.
The OCVs will feature K-Pos dynamic positioning systems with permanent magnet motors on all azimuth thrusters, which will contribute to improved safety and energy efficiency, stated Kongsberg.
The battery-hybrid DC power and propulsion system will enable the vessel to operate on a single engine for the majority of its operational time. This system, combined with a “high-capacity” shore connection, battery system, and Energy Control System, will facilitate zero-emission operations while the vessel is docked and during loading procedures, added the company.
Kongsberg Maritime VP sales offshore Ottar Ristesund said: “Our integrated systems will enhance vessel efficiency and significantly reduce emissions.
“We are collaborating with Sea1 on an in-depth benchmark study to assess emission reductions of the many individual measures incorporated into the design and our deliverables. This insight may increase the awareness of the efficiency potential of operations as well as provide insight into future vessel designs.”
The energy management system integrates energy flows from the 250t hybrid electric crane, gangways, and ROV to maximise energy efficiency.
It captures regenerative power and optimises the balance between battery usage and variable speed engines, regardless of whether the vessels are powered by diesel, biodiesel, or methanol.
In February, Kongsberg Maritime received a contract to supply an integrated equipment package for Bibby Marine’s new eCSOV.
This package will include full-electric rim-drive propulsion and azimuth and tunnel thrusters.
The eCSOV, claimed to be the “world’s first full-electric offshore vessel”, is expected to be delivered in 2027.
