K Shipbuilding, Sejin, ClassNK Advance Eco LPG Carrier Design | Mariner News
Korean shipbuilder K Shipbuilding, tank manufacturer Sejin Heavy Industries, and classification society ClassNK have formalized a joint development agreement for a new generation Eco LPG carrier, targeting proactive compliance with upcoming amendments to the International Gas Carrier (IGC) Code. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok.
This collaboration positions the firms to develop a 9,000 m³ class LPG carrier design ahead of significant regulatory changes. An amendment to the IGC Code, governing ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk, is scheduled for adoption at IMO’s MSC 112 in December this year and will enter into force on July 1, 2028. Designing to these standards now signals a forward-looking approach to market demands for compliant tonnage.
Beyond regulatory adherence, the design integrates Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) such as a Rudder Bulb and Energy Saving Fin. These additions are intended to enhance propulsive efficiency, leading to improved fuel economy and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the outset. This dual focus addresses both forthcoming regulatory mandates and broader industry decarbonization goals.
Under the MOU, K Shipbuilding will lead the overall 9,000 m³ class LPG carrier design, incorporating the IGC Code amendment. Sejin Heavy Industries is responsible for developing the cargo tank design, also applying the amended IGC Code and leveraging wide-plate bending technology. ClassNK will provide design review services, ensuring adherence to the updated international code.
This tripartite effort is designed to facilitate the smooth application of the IGC Code amendment, contributing to the development of safer and more efficient vessels in the gas shipping sector.
