K Line Names TOHO EMERALD Dual-Fuel LNG Carrier | Mariner News

Trust Score: 40

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line) has officially named its latest dual-fuel LNG carrier, TOHO EMERALD, during a ceremony held at Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. in South Korea on September 9, 2026. The new vessel, developed through a joint venture with Toho LNG Shipping Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Toho Gas Co., Ltd., marks a significant step in K Line’s strategic expansion within the LNG shipping sector.

The TOHO EMERALD is equipped with an ME-GA dual-fuel engine, optimized for primary operation on LNG, which is expected to deliver highly efficient performance while contributing to a reduction in environmental impact. This choice of propulsion technology aligns with broader industry trends towards cleaner marine fuels and improved exhaust gas performance.

Positioned to bolster the global energy supply chain, the vessel is slated to provide LNG transportation services, including dedicated support for Toho Gas. This operational model, often secured through long-term contracts and strategic partnerships, is central to K Line’s Medium-Term Management Plan, published in May 2022.

Under this plan, K Line has designated its LNG carrier business as a key driver for growth, leveraging long-term contractual arrangements to stabilize earnings. The TOHO EMERALD’s deployment, particularly its association with an energy utility like Toho Gas, underscores a strategy to secure reliable vessel employment that insulates revenue streams from the volatility of short-term spot market rates for high-value, specialized assets.
