K Line Adds Dual-Fuel LNG Carrier “Toho Emerald” | Mariner News
Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K LINE) has expanded its liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping capacity with the addition of the new 174,000 m3 dual-fuel LNG carrier, Toho Emerald. The vessel will operate under long-term contracts, primarily transporting LNG for Toho Gas and bolstering its energy supply operations. This move significantly strengthens K LINE’s position within the LNG shipping market.
Built by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea, the Toho Emerald was named on September 9. It is jointly owned by T.K. LNG Shipping, a joint venture between K LINE and Toho LNG Shipping, a wholly owned subsidiary of Toho Gas.
The Toho Emerald is fitted with an LNG dual-fuel engine, leveraging LNG as a comparatively mature and widely available alternative marine fuel. While LNG emits less CO2 than conventional fuels, the industry also grapples with methane slip, a potent greenhouse gas that can undermine a portion of the fuel’s green credentials.
This strategic investment by K LINE highlights a commitment to current LNG demand through long-term contracts. Simultaneously, the industry is increasingly looking towards cleaner bio-LNG, which can be used in existing LNG-fuelled ships and offers higher net greenhouse gas savings. The vessel’s design thus positions K LINE not only to meet immediate energy supply needs for Toho Gas but also to capitalize on potential future fuel advancements, allowing for enhanced environmental performance with drop-in alternatives.
