Itochu Invests in India’s First Ammonia Terminal at Pipavav | Mariner News
Itochu has secured a strategic foothold in India’s emerging clean energy infrastructure through an investment in the nation’s first independent ammonia storage terminal at Port Pipavav in Gujarat. The terminal, which commenced operations on August 10, marks a significant step in establishing crucial logistics for a fuel poised to play a major role in global decarbonization efforts.
The Japanese trading company’s investment was made by acquiring a portion of Aegis Terminal’s equity from Aegis Vopak Terminals. The facility features a 36,000 metric ton ammonia storage tank, alongside comprehensive cargo handling facilities, pipelines, and dedicated truck loading and unloading infrastructure, indicating readiness for significant throughput.
This development positions Port Pipavav as an early mover in India’s ammonia supply chain, crucial not only for traditional industrial and fertilizer applications but increasingly for clean energy. Itochu specifically highlighted ammonia’s projected growth as a maritime fuel and a carrier for hydrogen, signaling its long-term strategic importance.
Such dedicated independent storage and handling capacity is a tangible step towards enabling future large-scale adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel and an energy commodity. The operational status of this terminal underscores India’s proactive approach to integrating lower-carbon energy pathways into its port and logistics networks, potentially creating essential supply nodes for future ammonia-fueled vessels.
