The International Maritime Organization (IMO) enthusiastically welcomes the BBNJ Agreement’s entry into force on January 17, 2026. This landmark global treaty, officially titled the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction, marks a critical milestone for ocean governance. Its implementation establishes legally-binding rules for sustainable use and management of marine resources in the high seas, an area vital for global marine biodiversity. This signifies a united effort to safeguard our oceans.
A New Era for Ocean Conservation
The BBNJ Agreement is the world’s first universal accord protecting ocean life in international waters. Key Pillars of the BBNJ Treaty

IMO Secretary-General Mr. Arsenio Dominguez lauded this achievement.
