Houthi attack hits two oil tankers in Red Sea

According to Reuters, on 2nd September, two oil tankers—the Saudi-flagged Amjad and the Panama-flagged Blue Lagoon I—were attacked in the Red Sea near Yemen.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for striking the Blue Lagoon I with missiles and drones but did not mention the Saudi tanker. Despite the attacks, both vessels managed to continue their journeys without significant damage or casualties.

Bahri, the Saudi national shipping group that owns the Amjad, and Sea Trade Marine SA, the Greek manager of the Blue Lagoon I, were both unavailable for immediate comment. The Amjad, a supertanker with a capacity of up to 2 million barrels, and the Blue Lagoon I, a Suezmax tanker with a 1 million barrel capacity, were reportedly sailing close to each other when they were hit.

Since November, the Houthis have launched over 70 attacks on the waterway, which they justify as support for Palestinians in the Gaza conflict. Their assaults have resulted in the sinking of two vessels, the capture of another, and the deaths of at least three seafarers.
