HJSC Wins Order for Scrubber-Fitted Container Ships | Mariner News
South Korean shipyard HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) has secured a significant order for two advanced scrubber-fitted container ships. This shipbuilding contract, valued at an impressive $266 million, comes from an undisclosed European shipowner and includes an option for two additional vessels. The 10,100 TEU boxships represent a major milestone for HJSC’s Yeongdo Shipyard, marking its first construction of container vessels exceeding 10,000 TEU. This deal reinforces South Korea’s robust position in the global shipbuilding industry.
Enhancing Maritime Compliance with Scrubber Technology
A key feature of these new container ship orders is the integration of exhaust gas cleaning systems, commonly known as scrubbers. These advanced systems enable the vessels to operate efficiently on High Sulfur Fuel Oil (HSFO) while fully complying with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) stringent 0.5% global sulfur cap. This ensures sustainable operations and allows for flexibility in fuel choices, making these maritime vessels future-proof against environmental regulations.
Innovation Driving Shipbuilding Excellence
The successful bid highlights HJSC’s commitment to engineering breakthroughs. Yoo Sang-cheol, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding, emphasized that continuous innovation has allowed the Yeongdo Shipyard to overcome physical limitations, making it capable of building these large-capacity 10,100 TEU container ships. This demonstrates the yard’s evolving capabilities and its strategic expansion into larger vessel segments, solidifying its reputation for quality and advanced shipbuilding contracts.
