HJ Heavy Industries secures design approval for 88,000㎥ VLAC

HJ Heavy Industries announced on the 30th that it has obtained approval for the design concept for an 88,000㎥ super-large eco-friendly ammonia carrier (VLAC) at Lloyd’s Shipment in the UK.

HJ Heavy Industries and Lloyds Shipment signed a memorandum of understanding in July to jointly develop next-generation super-large ammonia carriers and have been focusing on research activities for about six months.

HJ Heavy Industries explained, “Based on our technology accumulated through research and development of eco-friendly ships such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual fuel (DF) and methanol-powered container ships, we have been certified for the basic and structural design of 88,000㎥ super-sized ammonia carriers that meet all design load conditions required by the ship.”

With the approval of the design concept, HJ Heavy Industries plans to actively respond to the demand for the decarbonized ship market and prepare for the increasing demand for orders in the direction of further development of ammonia-powered carriers.

In particular, orders for ships using ammonia as the main fuel, including ammonia carriers, are expected to increase steadily as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) formalizes its “net-zero” drive aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions for ships by 2050.
