Havila Voyages: Cruise Ship Adopts Bio-LNG for Green Sailing
Havila Voyages is making significant strides in sustainable maritime operations, with its cruise ship, Havila Polaris, successfully completing two Bio-LNG bunkering operations. This pioneering move underscores the company’s commitment to reducing environmental impact on its Norwegian coastal sailings. The Havila Polaris recently received 200 cubic meters of renewable natural gas (Bio-LNG) in Hammerfest, followed by an additional 150 cubic meters in Bergen, marking a crucial step towards greener voyages for the maritime industry.
Significant Emissions Reductions with Bio-LNG
The adoption of Bio-LNG as a marine fuel promises substantial environmental benefits. Havila Voyages estimates that the Havila Polaris can achieve an impressive 92% reduction in CO2 emissions when utilizing Bio-LNG in conjunction with its battery pack. Bent Martini, CEO of Havila Voyages, highlights that “biogas can deliver very large emissions reductions, down towards zero, depending on the purity of the gas,” positioning it as a powerful tool for decarbonization. As a cleaner alternative to conventional LNG, Bio-LNG serves as an effective drop-in fuel.
Leading the Charge in Sustainable Maritime Travel
This strategic bunkering demonstrates Havila Voyages’ leadership in promoting eco-friendly cruise travel and maritime sustainability. Many shipowners are increasingly turning to Bio-LNG to minimize their carbon footprint and align with global environmental regulations. Havila Polaris’s commitment to clean energy not only enhances its own green credentials but also sets a benchmark for the wider shipping sector, encouraging broader adoption of sustainable fuels for a healthier planet.
