Germany’s Hartmann Group and Heidelberg Materials Northern Europe have announced a significant partnership to develop a groundbreaking methanol-fuelled cement carrier. This collaboration marks a major step forward in sustainable shipping, demonstrating a strong commitment to decarbonizing the maritime industry and embracing cleaner marine fuels. The innovative vessel is anticipated to begin operations in Norway by early 2028, setting a new standard for eco-friendly cement transport.

The new cement carrier will be expertly designed by Hartmann Reederei and operated by United Bulk Carriers, both subsidiaries of the Hartmann Group. Owned by Hartmann and chartered to Heidelberg Materials, this project highlights a concerted effort to integrate advanced, environmentally friendly technologies into critical supply chains. The move towards methanol as a marine fuel underscores the industry’s drive for greener logistics solutions.
The Future of Green Shipping
This initiative comes amidst a rapidly expanding global methanol-fuelled fleet. According to classification society DNV, there are currently 97 such ships, with projections indicating a substantial increase to 353 vessels by 2030. This growth signifies a surging demand for methanol as a viable alternative fuel, crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the shipping sector.
