Hapag-Lloyd is making significant strides towards a greener future for global shipping by announcing an order for eight new methanol-fuelled boxships. This strategic move underscores the German container shipping giant’s commitment to decarbonization and sustainable maritime operations. Boosting Sustainable Shipping

The new 4,500 TEU dual-fuelled container ships are designed for delivery between 2028 and 2029. Equipped with advanced methanol engines, these vessels will be up to 30 percent more efficient than older ships of similar capacity. This efficiency gain, combined with the use of alternative fuels like methanol, is projected to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 350,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent annually, a substantial contribution to cleaner shipping.

This investment allows Hapag-Lloyd to not only enhance its environmental footprint but also modernize its fleet.
