Halten Bulk Orders Wind-Assisted Bulk Carriers | Mariner News
Norwegian shipping company Halten Bulk is making significant strides in sustainable shipping by ordering two wind-assisted vessels, with options to secure two additional ships. This strategic move highlights a growing industry commitment to emissions reduction and fuel efficiency through innovative maritime technology. The new self-discharging bulk carriers represent a crucial step in Halten Bulk’s ongoing fleet renewal program, setting a new standard for environmentally conscious bulk transport.
Advancing Maritime Sustainability
The 7,100 dwt vessels will feature state-of-the-art rotor sail technology, designed to harness wind energy and significantly supplement engine power. Beyond wind assistance, these eco-friendly vessels boast a hybrid-electric propulsion system, complete with a shaft generator and battery pack. Additional energy-efficiency measures include an electric excavator, all aimed at drastically lowering bunker fuel consumption and reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint.
Strategic Fleet Modernization
Built by Jiangsu SOHO Marine Heavy Industry in China, based on a design from The Norwegian Ship Design Company, these ships are engineered for performance and environmental stewardship. They will primarily operate in the spot market across key European waters, including the Norwegian coast, the North Sea, the Nordic region, and the Baltic. This investment underscores Halten Bulk’s vision for a modern, sustainable fleet capable of meeting both operational demands and stricter environmental regulations. This forward-thinking approach positions Halten Bulk as a leader in green shipping innovation.
