Hafnia & Socatra Deliver Final Methanol Tanker | Mariner News
Shipping leaders Hafnia and France-based Socatra have announced a significant step in sustainable marine transport with the delivery of their final dual-fuel methanol tanker. This vessel, part of the pioneering ECOMAR joint venture newbuilding programme, marks a crucial milestone for greener operations within the industry. It will operate under a long-term charter with French energy giant TotalEnergies, underscoring a commitment to advanced, eco-friendly solutions.
ECOMAR Series Completes its Fleet
The newly delivered ship, named Ecomar Gironde, represents the fourth and last in the innovative ECOMAR series. Built at Guangzhou Shipyard International in China, this 49,800-dwt chemical IMO II medium-range tanker joins its sister vessels, Ecomar Gascogne, Ecomar Garonne, and Ecomar Guyenne. These advanced tankers are designed to navigate the evolving landscape of marine fuels, offering greater flexibility and reduced environmental impact.
Powering a Cleaner Future
Ralph Juhl, EVP Head of Technical at Hafnia, emphasized the pragmatic approach this vessel embodies for the energy transition. Capable of running on both methanol and conventional marine fuels, the Ecomar Gironde provides operators like TotalEnergies with adaptability as the infrastructure for clean marine fuels develops. This flexibility positions the tanker as a forward-thinking asset, prepared for the cleaner fuels of tomorrow while maintaining efficiency today. This commitment to methanol-powered shipping is a clear signal of the industry’s push towards decarbonization and sustainable operations.
